GRAND  LAKE,  COLORADO  ~
Arrive Monday, July 28th - Depart Thursday, July 31st

Our host lodging facility for this Rocky Mountain High Adventure will be the luxurious Gateway Inn (970-627-2400). Go to their web site & see what world class lodging looks like. (www.gatewayinn.com). Grand Lake is located north/west of Denver. If you are traveling from the east, take Interstate 70 west, exit  # 232 which is highway 40 north through Winter Park & then onto highway 34 into Grand Lake. Very small town. Denver to Grand Lake is 106 miles. The reason I made this a 3 night, 2 day ride is because we are definitely in the high rent district. With 2 full days of guided touring, it will be very easy to add another 1 or 2 days of un-guided riding. That makes this trip more affordable.
This will be my first time to four wheel here, but I have snowmobiled the same trails a few years back. What I remember most is the awesome scenery around every turn in the trail. We seen Moose (lots of them) and we even seen Mountain Goats. We will be riding at an elevation of 10758 feet as we are darting in & out of the Arapaho National Forest, fording creek beds & enjoying those mountain vistas. This will be a tour that stays etched in your mind for a very long time.

Tour Cost = $440 Per Person. If You Prefer Single Occupancy, Add $154.
A Deposit Of $150 Per Person Is Required To Hold Your Reservation.

The Quoted Price Includes Three Nights Lodging, Three Evening Dinners, Two Breakfasts, Two Days Of Riding, Guide Fees, Keepsake Nametag, A Logo Tee Shirt, A Dust Bandana, All Related Taxes & Food Gratuities.

This area has long been known as the Mecca of snowmobiling. But, in recent years four wheelers have discovered what trails and scenery on the Plateau of the Adirondack Mountains have to offer. Our riding elevation will vary from 900 / 2000 feet. Consequently there won't be a need to change jetting. Our trails will be very diversified ranging from old seasonal roads with wheel ruts to asphalt roads for the sake of allowing access into towns for gasoline & lunch. We'll be riding in area's that still have no electricity with farm homes dating back 150 years. The animals that we will encounter will be beavers, whitetail deer, eagles, hawks & owls, wild turkeys & possums. Just like a zoo. Each day our miles will vary from 40 / 80 depending on which group you choose to ride in. Our day starts at 7:30 AM with breakfast & on our scoots at 8:30 AM. We'll ride to approximately 4:30 PM, and have dinner at 6:30 PM. That schedule will prevail each day. These trails are rated easy to mode!

I have been hosting tours in the Black Hills for 10 years. Every year they book solid as soon as dates are released. We get several repeat guests each year. The Hills just has that magnetic draw. So after you finish reading this, fill out the application & mail it today or you'll miss out on the opportunity! Some of the scenic highlights of this trip will be the filming site of Dances With Wolves, Roughlock Falls, Cement Ridge, the Silica Mines, the Ice Caves and the old car graveyard. Hopefully we'll also see a herd of 35/45 Elk. On one of the evenings we'll bus to Deadwood to dine at Jakes Supper Club, which is owned by Kevin Costner. My wife Bev overheard some of the people from the last tour comment that this was the best meal they have ever had. Very pricey, but included in the cost of the tour. On all of our tours, I divide the group into 3 or 4 smaller riding groups. That way you get to ride the way that you prefer. While you are in South Dakota plan your non-riding days to visit Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Needles Hwy and the Devils Tower. Naturally, Wall Drug is a must. The quoted price includes three nights lodging, three evening dinners (one of those dinners being at Kevin Costner's Supper Club), two breakfasts, guide fees and all related taxes and food gratuities.

The Way Out Adventure Tours - Oak Ridge, TN

Oak Ridge Is Like A Giant Magnet. It Just Keeps Drawing You Back
This will be our fourth & fifth time at Oak Ridge. If we don't have fun, we certainly don't go back. What does that tell you? This adventure will keep you excited and your camera busy. The varied terrain will take us to mountaintops and to the valleys down below. There will be soup holes to either go around or to go through. I would rate these trails moderate. Some are too narrow for a Ranger, so plan accordingly. Two days we will have a trail cookout at a central location so that all three riding groups are cooking out as one. So come join the fun and find out firsthand what "THE WAY OUT" really means.
There have been so many superlatives written about the Oak Ridge ATV area. It seems every sport magazine has something nice to say. That's probably due to the Windrock ATV Club and the hardworking people that make up their membership. Our guides will be the very personable Herb, Debbie, Red & Wally.
THIS TOUR WILL SELL OUT IN A HURRY. HE WHO HESITATES, STAYS HOME
Note: There are no RV Parks close by & no place to rent an ATV. Our riding elevation will be a max of 3200 feet, consequently no need to re-jet. No special clothing or helmets are required. Helmets are always recommended. No special Tennessee registration is required, but you will be required to purchase a $20 local trail pass.
Tour Cost = $415 Per Person, Double Occupancy. If You Prefer Single Occupancy, Add 35%. A Deposit Of $150 Per Person Is Required To Hold Your Reservation.
The Quoted Price Includes Three Nights Lodging, Three Evening Dinners, Two Breakfasts, Keepsake Name Tags, Logo Tee-Shirt, Two Trail Cookouts, Guide Fees & All Related Taxes & Food Gratuities.

~  PARKER,  ARIZONA,  ~
  Monday, October 27 / 30
Can you imagine spending three nights at the Blue Waters Resort & Casino on the bank of the Colorado River? Slot machines, Keno, Poker & Bingo, indoor water park with four swimming pools & a very popular waterslide. We'll be treated to first class lodging, entertainment, food & libations It's hard to find an area that offers it all, but Parker is one that does. During the day, our playground will be the desert of Arizona. We'll be discovering abandoned gold mines, riding the dry gulches of what used to be a creek, and one day looking over the ruins of a ghost town. Our daytime temperatures on both tours will be in the eighties with very low humidity. Should make for some excellent riding. No trail permits are required, but you must be registered in your home state. Always carry proof of ATV insurance & health insurance. Helmets are not required by law, but they are most certainly recommended. Remember to bring a lot of bottled water.
Tour Cost = $435 Per Person, Double Occupancy. If You Prefer Single Occupancy, Add 35 %.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OFF-ROAD BUSINESS GROUP LODGES
FORMAL COMPLAINT AGAINST NEVADA BLM EMPLOYEES

Complaint Seeks Investigation Into Potential Misconduct Of Carson City
Field Office Employees on Sand Mountain Issues

SANTEE, CA (July 21, 2003) - The Off-Road Business Association (ORBA), comprised of off-highway vehicle businesses throughout the U.S., recently filed a formal complaint and request for investigation with the Department of Interior’s Western Region Inspector General’s Office in Sacramento, Calif. to determine whether employees at the Carson City, Nevada BLM office engaged in misconduct arising out of their recommendation that 1,000 acres of the Sand Mountain Recreation Area be closed to protect the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly.
According to Roy Denner, president and CEO of ORBA based in Santee, Calif., the four employees allegedly joined teams of anti-access groups, participated in private meetings, and excluded off-highway vehicle and business groups during recent workshops, field surveys and planning meetings in an attempt to close 1,000 acres of the 4,795-acre Sand Mountain Recreation Area, located 25 miles east of Fallon, Nev.
“This complaint and request for investigation arises out of the proposed emergency closure of nearly one-fourth of the popular Sand Mountain area purportedly in order to protect the habitat of the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly,” Denner said. “What’s interesting here is that this species is not listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act, but simply listed as sensitive by the Bureau.”

Page 2

Denner said his organization obtained official BLM documents through the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act revealing multiple communications between BLM staff and anti-access groups discussing potential management strategies for closure, revisions to the area management plan, and field studies involving the anti-access groups and BLM staff.
“It is totally unfair to off-highway vehicle families to even consider temporarily closing this area without properly educating visitors as to why they are doing it,” said Jon Crowley, who leads a group called Friends of Sand Mountain. “The bureau has known about this butterfly since 1994, but has done little or nothing to educate users about how to protect it.”
Crowley said the Friends of Sand Mountain made multiple requests to the Carson City BLM employees requesting that his organization be included on Sand Mountain field trips; however, those requests were ignored and bureau employees continued to meet with the anti-access groups and the Native American tribe on the sensitive species issue.
Denner said that his organization consulted with other off-road groups and local businesses near Sand Mountain and learned that none of these groups were invited to participate in the bureau’s workshops and discussions regarding Sand Mountain.
“We know for a fact that the Code of Federal Regulations requires all bureau employees to act impartially on land use issues and not give preferential treatment to any individual or group,” Denner said, “and we are asking the Department of the Inspector General to investigate whether Bureau employees gave preferential treatment to anti-access groups while excluding OHV and business groups from the process in violation of these federal regulations.”
The complaint also seeks an investigation into the BLM’s assistance in drafting The Nature Conservancy’s own conservation assessment and working with the group to develop a press release for the local media aimed at reducing potential backlash from recreationists concerning a revised management plan for Sand Mountain that was apparently being discussed.

“The regulations prohibit Bureau officials from brazenly taking sides in this dispute and we are hopeful that the Department of Interior’s Inspector General will take appropriate action,” Denner said. “The BLM should make sure that it is relying on good science instead of making a ‘feel good’ type of decision

###

ORBA is a Santee, California-based trade association comprised of off-road related businesses united to promote common goals that support the prosperity and growth of the off-road industry. ORBA’s goal is to become strong enough to stand up to the anti-access organizations and oppose their extreme positions on land use issues and to prevent their continuing attempts to curtail off-road recreation opportunities.

News Release
For Immediate Release: July 21, 2003 CC2003-30
BLM Making Changes at Sand Mountain Recreation Area

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City Field Office, is taking emergency action pursuant to existing authority to protect and restore the sand dune ecosystem at Sand Mountain Recreation Area (SMRA) in Churchill County, Nevada, while allowing for the continued enjoyment by the public.

“While the Sand Mountain Recreation Area is not being closed, changes are being implemented due to increased disturbance of vegetation in the dune ecosystem from off-highway vehicle use,” said John Singlaub, BLM’s Carson City Field Office Manager. “The Sierra Front-Northwest Great Basin Resource Advisory Council, a 15-member, interdisciplinary group, unanimously passed a resolution last week that spells out short-term management actions and long-term planning efforts they would recommend that BLM implement at Sand Mountain.” We’re going to work on the ground with the Friends of Sand Mountain, Blue Ribbon Coalition, and other groups to make this work for everyone.”

Highlights of BLM’s actions will be to:

Continue to manage the Sand Mountain Recreation Area (SMRA) under the existing off road vehicle designations.

Develop programs and practices that encourage OHV users to prevent disturbance of Kearny Buckwheat habitat within and outside the SMRA. These actions will be implemented no later than August 30, 2003.

Begin efforts to restore and rehabilitate disturbed Kearny Buckwheat habitat within and outside the SMRA.

Identify existing disturbed travel routes through the Kearny Buckwheat habitat to connect OHV use areas within and outside the SMRA. Discourage OHV use in the habitat area outside these travel routes.

Continue scientific investigations into the Sand Mountain ecosystem, including studies of the natural history of the plants and animals, restoration techniques and monitoring technology.

Initiate a revised management plan for the Sand Mountain landscape to update the current Recreation Area Management Plan, reflecting the increasing amount and variety of uses and demands of the area.

Working closely with the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, develop management strategies for Sand Mountain that honor the spiritual values associated with the area, and that allow for appropriate uses of Sand Mountain by the Tribe consistent with their traditions. These strategies will be identified and implemented in the revised SMRA Management Plan.

These actions and the effects of these actions will be monitored by BLM and additional actions taken as needed to achieve these goals. The complete text of the Decision Document and RAC Resolution is attached, below.

For more information, please contact Elayn Briggs, BLM-Associate Field Manager, or Mark Struble, BLM-Public Affairs Officer, at (775) 885-6000.

Campers, vehicles to be banned from Wilson Canyon

      by Kurt Hildebrand
A popular segment of the West Walker River will be closed to campers and
off-highway vehicles after Labor Day.

Wilson Canyon, between Smith and Mason valleys, will be closed after the
holiday, according to Chuck Pope, assistant director of the Bureau of Land
Management's Carson City field office.

Pope said the decision to close the riverside and bed came after meetings
with residents, off-highway vehicle users and county officials.

"We took into account some of common interests people had," he said. "The
common thread was that we need to protect river corridor while still
allowing multiple use."

Pope said fishing and hiking will still be allowed along the river, but
signs will be posted informing campers of the ban and eventually blockades
will be erected to prevent vehicle access.

"The BLM is willing to close access to protect river corridor," he said. "It
has suffered serious damage from people camping right on river, people
driving into the river, they've had some fires, and there is human waste and
trash left in the area."

The bureau controls both sides of the Walker River in the canyon. Pope said
the extent of the area covered by the order will be determined by BLM
experts.

"We'll take a scientific look at what needs to be closed with our
scientists," Pope said. "We want to let people have a quality recreation
experience and protect resource at the same time. We will continue to work
with county and the interest groups, using their input to make decisions."

Nearby property owner Laurie Christine supported closing the river to
vehicles and campers.

"This is a wonderful area for camping, but it has just been destroyed, and
the damage is continual and accelerating over the past two years."

Christine said all-terrain vehicle riders are driving down the riverbed when
the water is low.

"There is no law enforcement," she said. "It has been illegal to camp in the
rest area. There is an 18-hour limit, but I've seen at least a half-dozen
people who have been there for a couple of days. They use it as a staging
area for off-road vehicles."

An organization called Friends of Wilson Canyon represents off-road vehicle
users and opposes limiting vehicle access in the area.

A spokesman for the group couldn't be reached for comment on Friday.

Dear Sand Mountain Enthusiast:

It is likely that that Sand Mountain advisory subgroup will not come to any consensus regarding advising the BLM on the 1000 acre potential closure. The decision will end up in the BLM's hands in Carson City. That being the case, it is very important to pressure the BLM in regards to this decision. So far, they have heard from several OHV organizations opposing the closure (ORBA, CA4WDC, CORVA, BRC, ASA, AMA, etc.), but they also need to hear from as many users as possible.

One way that you can help is by writing a letter. We don't want a bunch of canned letters, so take a few minutes to put down your personal thoughts.

BLM needs to hear from you before July 10.

Please make an effort to put a hard-copy in the mail or Fax. This is much more effective than an email.

Some suggested talking points for your letter (you don't have to hit all of them):
 1. Education is needed before closure.

 2. Learn to grow the plants necessary for sensitive species.

 3. There aren't any species at Sand Mountain currently protected under the Endangered Species Act. Use good science to make sure there is clear and convincing data showing OHV's are harming sensitive species.

 4. Family time in the dunes is very important to your family and you use all of Sand Mountain (BLM doesn't think users use the 1000 acres much).

 5. Economic impact must be considered.

Direct your letter to:

USA-ALL ACTION ALERT
COMMENT LETTER REQUESTED

Utah's Wilderness Advocacy Groups (WAGs) Fight New ATV Jamboree In Southeastern Utah
Local WAG Activists Vow To Eliminate ATV’s On Public Lands
Comment Letters In Support Of ATV Jamborees Needed

Situation:
A coalition of ATV enthusiasts and local businesses are working with local government to host an ATV Jamboree in scenic San Juan County, Utah. The Jamboree will use existing roads and trails on BLM and National Forest Lands, as well as San Juan County Class “D” roads (a.k.a. R.S. 2477 roads).

BLM is currently performing the required environmental and socio-economic analysis. Anti-Access groups such as the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) have revved up their letter writing machine in opposition of the Jamboree and ATV use on BLM lands. Several WAG activists who live in the area have vowed to eliminate ATV use on public lands.

Comments are needed that show strong public support for organized events such as Jamborees and “Club Rides”.

More Information on BLM’s permit is available here: http://www.blm.gov/utah/monticello/safari-ea.htm
San Juan Safari ATV Jamboree Website: http://www.sanjuansafari.com

What You Can Do:
Comments are best submitted in writing via email or via U.S. Mail. We’ve included some information below to help you with your comments.

Comments will be accepted until July 9, 2003 and may be mailed to the BLM, Monticello Field Office, Attention Patrick Madigan, P.O. Box 7, Monticello, Utah 84535, or e-mailed to : Scott_Berkenfield@blm.gov

However, if you really want to thwart SUWA’s efforts: simply make plans to attend the event!! I visit this area of Utah often and can attest to its spectacular scenic qualities. I also know the folks who are organizing the event and can guarantee professional, well organized rides.

The Jamboree is planned for September 25, 26 & 27. Registration is limited to 350 ATVs and trail capacity per day is also limited, so early registration is recommended.  Applications can be obtained by contacting the San Juan Safari at (435) 587-ATV5 or at http://www.sanjuansafari.com.

Comment Suggestions:
It’s always a good idea to tell the BLM just a little bit about yourself and how much you and your family enjoys OHV use on public lands in Utah.

Tell the BLM that you strongly support ATV and Jeep Jamborees.

Tell the BLM that you do not support any restrictive management for lands proposed for Wilderness by environmental groups. Remind BLM that only Congress can designate lands Wilderness.

Tell the BLM that you strongly support multiple use management for all BLM lands.

Remind the BLM that ATV Jamborees are extremely popular and highly valued by public land visitors.

Remind the BLM how the Rocky Mountain and Fillmore ATV Jamborees have provided valuable user involvement and funding for maintenance, monitoring and enforcement on trails used by those Jamborees.

ATV Jamborees are an excellent way to imbue a greater appreciation of proper backcountry ethics and “Tread Lightly” information to public land visitors.

Remind the BLM that the U.S. Congress has provided direction to land management agencies nationally to assume a proactive role in assisting rural communities to grow and prosper.  This has been done through numerous legislative actions, funding of rural development programs, and other initiatives.  The BLM is not exempt from this important requirement. ATV Jamborees have real economic benefits to local communities without showing adverse environmental effects.
